About Mister Spectrum

Mister Spectrum is a website dedicated to exploring, documenting and preserving the world of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and its programming, hardware and history.

The site grew from my own interest in researching the Spectrum, particularly its BASIC programming language and the many details that are often overlooked or only briefly explained in the original documentation. Over time, this research developed into a collection of articles, experiments and investigations covering many different aspects of the ZX Spectrum.

The Aim of Mister Spectrum

The aim of this website is to provide a historical reference for the popular 1980s home computer, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

I hope to create a useful reference guide containing information about the Spectrum, its development, its hardware, its software and its programming. The information provided is non-exhaustive and the site is an ongoing project. Articles may be added, updated or corrected as new information comes to light.

A key aim of Mister Spectrum is to encourage visitors to explore and verify programming research for themselves. Where possible, ideas and claims are investigated, tested and compared with original documentation and other reliable sources.

What's Covered?

The site aims to cover a wide range of subjects relating to the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and its extended family.

Original ZX Spectrum
The original 16K and 48K systems, including their hardware and programming.

Software
Software for the original Spectrum computers, with the emphasis on understanding and documenting software rather than reviewing games.

Programming
Programming tips, techniques, experiments and investigations into Sinclair BASIC and other aspects of Spectrum programming.

Peripherals
Peripherals such as joystick interfaces, keyboards, printer interfaces and other hardware associated with the Spectrum.

Later Spectrum Models
The ZX Spectrum+, ZX Spectrum 128K and the Amstrad versions, including the +2, +2A, +2B and +3.

International Versions
International versions and related machines, including Timex Sinclair, Investronica Spectrum, Timex Computer and dB.

History and Reference

What Isn't Included?

Games are generally not covered, except where there is a particular reason for including them. There are already many excellent websites dedicated to reviewing and documenting ZX Spectrum games, so Mister Spectrum concentrates on other aspects of the computer.

Generic peripherals, such as dot-matrix printers or joysticks that could be used with many different computers of the time, are also generally outside the scope of the site.

Exceptions may be made for peripherals that were originally made for another computer but were marketed specifically towards ZX Spectrum users, or for multi-platform peripherals that have particular significance to the Spectrum.

Exploring Beyond the Spectrum

Although the ZX Spectrum is at the heart of the site, Mister Spectrum also looks at other computers and programming languages from the same era.

Comparing the Spectrum with other home computers can reveal both the similarities and differences between the machines of the time. These comparisons can sometimes challenge assumptions about what different computers could and could not do, while also providing a better understanding of the design decisions behind them.

Research and Verification

Mister Spectrum is intended to be more than a collection of information copied from existing sources. Where possible, information is researched, tested and investigated.

Programming techniques may be tested on real or emulated hardware, historical information may be compared with contemporary documentation, and claims about the Spectrum's capabilities may be explored through practical experiments.

The intention is to encourage curiosity and investigation. Visitors are welcome to explore the information presented here and, where appropriate, verify it for themselves.

Accessibility and Design

I have tried to create a website that is accessible and straightforward to use.

The pages are coded by hand and checked using HTML and CSS validation tools. Alternative text is provided for images where appropriate, and the site uses a high-contrast colour scheme designed to make the content easy to read.

The visual design uses a dark black and teal background with yellow and white text, inspired in part by the distinctive character of the original ZX Spectrum while remaining practical for reading and browsing.

An Ongoing Project

Mister Spectrum is an ongoing project. New research, experiments and articles will continue to be added, while existing information may be updated or corrected as new evidence comes to light.

The goal is simple: to help preserve the knowledge and curiosity surrounding the ZX Spectrum, while encouraging others to investigate, experiment and make their own discoveries.
