Alan Sugar is born
Alan Michael Sugar was born on 24 March 1947 in Hackney, London. He grew up in a working-class family and showed an early interest in business, selling electrical goods and other items from a young age.
In 1968, at the age of 21, Sugar founded Amstrad, initially operating as a wholesaler and manufacturer of consumer electronics. The company later became an important name in British home computing with the launch of the Amstrad CPC range in 1984.
In April 1986, Amstrad acquired the rights to Sinclair's existing computer products and the Sinclair brand. The deal brought the ZX Spectrum, ZX Spectrum+, ZX Spectrum 128 and Sinclair QL under Amstrad's control, eventually leading to the development of the Amstrad-designed ZX Spectrum +2 and +3.
Sugar became one of Britain's best-known entrepreneurs and later gained a much wider television audience through his role as host of The Apprentice.
