The journey from John O'Groats to Land's End began on 30 April 1985 and was completed on 4 May. Later records, including the 1987 Guinness Book of Records, credit John W. Owen and Roy Harvey with travelling 919 miles in a Sinclair C5 in 103 hours 15 minutes. A 17 April 1985 press release had previously announced the planned charity attempt by the ten-man Red Watch crew from Chingford Fire Station, raising funds for the Cancer Research Campaign and Royal Marsden Hospital. The relationship between the ten-man crew and the two riders credited in the later record requires further contemporary documentation.
