Micronet 800 launches
Micronet 800, an online information and communications service for home computer users, launches on Britain's Prestel network.
Developed by Telemap in association with ECC Publications and Prism Micro Products, Micronet 800 was designed specifically for the growing community of home computer users. Subscribers could connect to the service using a microcomputer and modem and access computer news, reviews, software information, electronic mail, classified advertisements and other services.
Micronet also became an important early source of telesoftware, allowing users to download programs over the telephone network and save them to their computers. ZX Spectrum owners could access the service using hardware such as the Prism VTX5000 modem.
The service was one of the earliest British online communities aimed specifically at home computer enthusiasts. It eventually became the largest specialised computer service on Prestel, reaching around 25,000 subscribers at its peak.
The first Micronet 800 subscriber was Jeremy Dredge, an estate agent, who joined on the service's opening day.
