Automata is formed
Automata was formed on 19 November 1977 by Mel Croucher, initially operating from his home. Croucher was one of Britain's earliest computer-game entrepreneurs, establishing Automata before there was an established home-computer software industry.
The company initially experimented with computer entertainment distributed through other media. One of its earliest projects involved broadcasting computer-game data over local radio, allowing listeners to record the signals and load them into their computers.
Automata later became one of the most distinctive software houses of the ZX Spectrum era. Its releases included Pimania, My Name Is Uncle Groucho, You Win A Fat Cigar, Automonopoli and the ambitious Deus Ex Machina. The company became known for its surreal humour, unusual advertising and the character Piman.
