First integrated circuit demonstrated
On 12 September 1958, Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments successfully demonstrated the first working integrated circuit at the company's laboratory in Dallas, Texas. His prototype was built on a small piece of germanium and combined several electronic components, including a transistor, resistive elements and a capacitor, into a single semiconductor device. When connected to an oscilloscope, the circuit produced a continuous electrical oscillation, proving that a complete electronic circuit could be constructed in a much smaller space.
The invention helped solve a growing problem in electronics known as the "tyranny of numbers". As electronic equipment became more complex, the large numbers of individual components and connections required made circuits increasingly difficult to build and maintain. Integrating components onto a single piece of semiconductor material offered a way to make electronic equipment smaller, more reliable and eventually considerably more powerful.
Robert Noyce independently developed another important approach to the integrated circuit at Fairchild Semiconductor, using silicon and integrated metal connections. The work of Kilby and Noyce laid the foundations for the modern microchip and semiconductor industry. Integrated circuits would eventually make possible the development of affordable microprocessors and the home computers of the 1970s and 1980s, including the ZX Spectrum.
